WestMAC operates a high quality homestay program for visiting international students as research has shown students improve their English more quickly when immersed in an English-speaking homestay environment.

Potential host families must meet the following criteria to be eligible to participate in the Homestay Program:

  • Applicant is an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Applicant can communicate effectively in English (written and verbal)
  • Applicant can meet all training and policy requirements
  • Family lives within a reasonable distance to the College (average travelling 25 minutes). Students may travel to school by bus, train or private car. The cost of transport is the responsibility of students.

Accommodation is assessed to ensure the rooms are safe, clean, well ventilated, secure and comfortable. Each room must be appropriately furnished as follows:

  • a bed (linen to be supplied)
  • study desk
  • lamp
  • cupboard (built in or freestanding)
  • ceiling fan or air conditioning
  • other optional bedroom furniture (e.g. bedside table, shelving, etc.)

Host families must provide three meals and snacks each day and are responsible for the student's laundry.

Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 and Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Regulation 2011. All host families who participate in the College homestay program are required to undergo a rigorous selection process including a National Police Check and Student Protection training. Suitable applicants are issued with a Positive Notice and a Blue Card. Every member of the host family who is over 18 years must hold a current Blue Card that is linked to the College. Host families and homestay students are regularly monitored to ensure the placement is suitable.

Students submit a homestay application once they have enrolled. The information provided is used to match the student to the most suitable host family. The Homestay Officer makes every effort to meet requests, prioritising requirements such as allergies, religious needs and dietary restrictions. Long term students of the same nationality are not placed together unless they are siblings or there are special circumstances to be considered.

Host families are instructed on cultural differences that may exist between Australian families and students from overseas. Families are required to attend compulsory orientation sessions to assist them to support and understand students from different backgrounds. Students can request a change of host family at the end of each term and must give two weeks’ notice. A fee of $310 is charged. All applications to change families must be approved by the parents and the Director of International Student Programs.

Students can speak with the Homestay Officer during office hours and are provided with two 24-hour contact numbers for after-hours emergencies.
